Arroyo Grande - Century for the Century Bike Ride
One of the Centennial Celebration events is a metric century bicycle ride, especially designed to accommodate novice riders and families or groups with young riders. The date for this event is the morning of Saturday, June 25, 2011.
The event is organized to allow novice riders a safe exposure to some distance riding but also provide experienced riders with a morning to sample the pleasures of Arroyo Grande’s countryside. This bicycling event is designed to encourage families or small groups to ride together and accumulate 62 miles (a metric century) of pleasant rural bicycle riding. For example a family/group of 3 would only need to ride 20 miles together to complete a (metric) century.
For those wishing a greater challenge, the individual metric century course will include longer routing with more climbing. The course, with three designated routes, will be open and monitored for 7 hours, from 7 AM to 2 PM. The three route lengths are: 20 miles, 30 miles and 62+ miles. The start and end for all routes will be at the Arroyo Grande Rotary Bandstand and Heritage Park.
Rest stops are planned for every 5 miles on all routes and each one will have water, port-a-potties and simple food items of fruit and other snacks. There will be roving support vehicles to assist with simple mechanical problems, communications, some transport issues, safety and minor medical aid.
Each family group or participant will be provided with a map and route instructions. Upon completion, each participant will be presented with a personalized certificate, suitable for framing. Each participant will also be given a pin commemorating the event.
All participants must wear proper helmets, have their bike pass a safety inspection at the start and follow standard bicycling rules of the road. Children 12 years old or under must ride with an adult (at least 18 years old). To complete registration and ride, every participant must submit an executed waiver.
Advanced registration fee schedule is: For individuals (riding alone) registration fee is $25 for adults and those aged from 13 to 17. It is $35 for a family pair. A family registration fee is $55 for up to 4 riders. For a youth group of up to 10 riders (adult leader and riders of ages 10 to 17), the fee is $85. Ride-day registration fee will be $10 additional, paid only by cash or check.
A special limited edition jersey has been designed to commemorate this one-time event and is available in all sizes for $43 tax included. Not only great for bicycling, but also for equestrian activity, running or just around town comfort.
At the completion of the ride the bandstand area will have music, lunch vendor booths set up and a little BMX exhibition area. There may be souvenir pins, t-shirts and jerseys for sale (any profits going back to the Village Improvement Association non-profit).
Park on the residential streets near the Rotary Bandstand. Overflow parking is nearby at the A.G. High School parking lot, 495 Valley Rd.
